Royce and Stan Hanley’s Journey

For Royce and Stan Hanley, their Integrace journey has been about two things: Answers and Action.

The catalyst for Royce and Stan was the moment Royce found herself lost in her own driveway. From that moment, they have become cognitive health enthusiasts, lifelong learners, yoga lovers, and have never lost perspective of the life they have created together.

“We are so grateful to have the benefit of these experiences,” says Royce. Stan agrees. “It’s been a process of discovery for us…with tremendous support along the way.”

“Stan and I made some positive lifestyle changes — like taking up yoga — that could help keep me healthy and minimize the impact of my cognitive issues.”

In addition to a commitment to a healthier lifestyle, Royce and Stan also sought opportunities to participate in studies offered at the Integrace Institute that spoke to each of them as individuals.

Royce’s interest was piqued by a technology needs study using the Amazon Echo, a brand of smart speakers that connects to the voice-controlled personal assistant service, Alexa.

“It’s really useful,” explains Royce. “My mind tends to wander. For example, sometimes I’ll start cooking something and then forget what I’m doing and go to another room to do something else. With Alexa, I can set a timer to remind myself. So it really is a safety benefit for me.”

Stan, as Royce’s primary caregiver, was also able to partake in a web-based family counseling service specially designed to support family caregivers of those with cognitive impairments. Through this study, Stan has connected with others in similar situations and now has greater awareness of both his own needs and Royce’s as they continue on this journey together.

“It’s made me very aware of Royce’s issues, as well as my own needs and experiences as a caregiver,” he says. “It’s helped me connect with others on the same journey and become more aware of the resources that are available to me.”

Today, Royce and Stan continue on their neurocognitive journey feeling empowered by the support, community and continuous opportunities thanks to the love and support of their Integrace family.
